A Thought (poetry)

When I wrote this poem, it became extremely clear that everything I've posted on a specific social media site had been getting bogged down for months. Of course that didn't occur to me at the time; a part of me thought I was being actively hidden from people I knew considering my views on this election. And it isn't extreme at all. However, the comment I received told me that the person thought I had switched sides at the last minute. I've always considered myself an independent and in recent years : independent/ left leaning. When I saw the TikTok ban happen and then how many executive orders were to be rescinded, I felt inspired to share this.

"Post whatever you want
Just don't post the truth.
It's okay to be you,
Just don't post the truth.
And whatever you do
Make sure that it's edited
And please be quiet
So they don't have to ask you twice.
And keep your eyes shut
So you don't see what's outside.
Stay in your bubble, your voice?
Yeah, turn it down to a muddle.
Because no one wants to hear
How we should link arms
Or helping those who need it,
Both near and afar.
They don't want us talking
They don't want us to be friends
They just want us to forget
The history and what sits within.
I'm not talking about just old history from 1932
I mean a few years ago in 2021,
Where were you?
When the capital was messed about
And someone said, "Hang Pence."
But that's not what America is all about.
Now fast forward to just days ago
Where they didn't want us to see
How people in CHINA, were actually living.
And now we know...
Now we know...
We've learned nothing
Because even when someone admits that they lied
They've proved they've been bought
They've proved that we're blind.
And I don't mean me,
I never voted for this
Oh wait, neither did half of ya'll
That's why voting machines exist.
And now everything's on the line:
Education, woman's rights
Immigration: I hope you don't look dark.
I don't say that 'cuz I hate you
I mean to say please be careful
because if you don't look like me
You'll be questioned and possibly...

But look what we have now
What would Jesus ACTUALLY do?
What would Martin Luther King Jr. do?
I want to love this place
With my whole heart
I said the pledge, for Pete's sake,
Indoctrinated from the start.
And I still can't understand how some voted for this man
Well, guess what?
Now our freedoms are being ripped from our hands.
Who's gonna stand up?
Are those of us awake just getting too tired?
And some who didn't vote, just laugh or explain it away;
You're literally almost worse.
One kid I have is disabled
Another looks more brown...
What do I do?
I don't have money to "Just leave" or get out of town.
Hey grandma, kinda glad that you're missing this part of the show
I hope you're looking down while I look up from below.
Because this is crazy.
What do I do?
What do the people do?"

This is my own work, I do not claim anyone else's work as my own. This is my own frustration I am entitled to. This world is more divided than ever. Everyone is out for "self" and if you help anyone else out, that's a problem. I don't believe we're here for that.
